Membership and Meetings

The Department generally maintains a membership of about 35 firefighters and a Support Group of about 45 non-firefighters. The SSVFD is always seeking new members in both categories, both men and women. Extensive training is given to all new firefighters before they are allowed to participate in any fire suppression activities. The Department holds meetings every Wednesday at 7:00 P.M. at the South Fire Station, 15 S. Dogwood Trail (across from the Kitty Hawk Elementary School). Prospective members are always welcome to attend one of the meetings. To learn more about the Department or how to become a member in any capacity, please contact any of the current members, call the station (261-2272) and leave a message, or come to one of the meetings. For more information go to their web site SSVFD.

Mayor Don Smith and George Kowalski, Chairman of the SSVFD Board with the new Truck 121.

The Southern Shores Volunteer Fire Department accepted delivery of a new firetruck on Thursday, December 15th. It has been a 10 month wait while the custom designed truck was being manufactured by KME Fire Apparatus in Nesquehoning, PA. The new truck was ordered through Slagle Fire Equipment Company in South Boston, VA. The truck will be stationed at the east fire station at E. Dogwood Tr. and Duck Road.

Features of the new 2005 KME apparatus include an International Navistar 4400 Series cab and chassis with a rescue style all aluminum body, with roll up compartment doors, a 1500 GPM (gallons per minute) Hale midship pump, and an XRT/Westerbeake generator and rescue tool system. A big addition to the SSVFD fleet is the 750 GPM CAFS PRO system, which is the state of the art compressed air foam capability. The emergency lighting system is a low profile, LED lighting array.

Truck 121 replaced the truck SSVFD donated Oct. 22, 2005 to East Harrison County Fire Dept., that had their vehicles destroyed in Hurricane Katrina.
