The Department is the only all-volunteer department on the North Beach. It provides fire service and emergency medical support to Southern Shores and Martin's Point. Funding is provided by the Town of Southern Shores and Dare County based upon contracts between the Department and the governments concerned. Membership and MeetingsThe Department generally maintains a membership of about 35 firefighters and a Support Group of about 45 non-firefighters. The SSVFD is always seeking new members in both categories, both men and women. Extensive training is given to all new firefighters before they are allowed to participate in any fire suppression activities. The Department holds meetings every Wednesday at 7:00 P.M. at the South Fire Station, 15 S. Dogwood Trail (across from the Kitty Hawk Elementary School). Prospective members are always welcome to attend one of the meetings. Truck 121 replaced the truck SSVFD donated Oct. 22, 2005 to East Harrison County Fire Dept., that had their vehicles destroyed in Hurricane Katrina. |
